An envelope from your insurance carrier isn't exactly a thrilling beach read. It usually ranks somewhere between a dental reminder and warranty reminder on the excitement scale.
Insurance mail is NOT exciting. We get it. But tearing open that envelope might just save you thousands of dollars.
As your local insurance agents, our goal is always to protect your hard-earned assets. However, behind the scenes, insurance companies frequently update the terms, conditions, and deductibles of the policies we sell. When these changes happen, the worst time to find out is after you've already suffered a loss.
Here is why that boring-looking envelope deserves a spot at the top of your mail pile.
Policy updates aren't always just administrative jargon; they often directly impact your wallet. Carriers constantly reassess risk, which means your policy renewal might look significantly different than it did last year.
Two major changes you need to watch out for include:
Rising Standard Deductibles: Your out-of-pocket cost before insurance kicks in might be creeping upward without you realizing it.
The Introduction of Percentage Deductibles: This is the big one. Carriers are increasingly moving toward percentage-based deductibles for wind and hail damage.
Instead of a flat $1,000 deductible, a percentage deductible is calculated based on the total limit of coverage on your home or commercial building. If your home is insured for $500,000 and your policy introduces a 2% wind/hail deductible, your out-of-pocket cost just jumped to $10,000. Those numbers get large, fast.
It's a fair question. As our agency has grown, we care deeply about every single client, but the sheer volume of policies makes it practically impossible for us to personally call every individual to read through their renewal line-by-line.
Because of this, the insurance company itself must legally be the messenger.
Here in Montana, consumers have strong protections. By law, insurance companies must provide you with a written notice at least 45 days in advance of any major change or reduction in your coverage.
That 45-day window is your golden opportunity to review your policy and make adjustments before it's too late.
The next time an insurance packet lands in your mailbox, don't toss it into the "deal with later" pile. Take five minutes to do the following:
Read the Cover Letter & Disclosure Pages: Carriers are legally required to summarize what is changing. Look specifically for terms like "Reduction of Coverage," "Deductible Change," or "Policy Endorsement." (Bonus: Sometimes these changes actually include improvements or extra coverages you didn't have before!)
Scan the Declaration ("Dec") Pages: This is the snapshot of your policy. Double-check your coverage limits, your premium, and your deductible amounts.
Highlight the Questions: If you see a term you don't understand, or a deductible that makes you nervous, highlight it.
You don't have to navigate the fine print alone. You don't need to become an insurance expert, that's our job.
If you open your mail and notice a change that leaves you confused or concerned about your financial exposure, call your agent immediately. We can look at your options, shop around if necessary, or help you find ways to buy down that deductible to a level you are comfortable with.
Don't wait for a claim to happen to find out what you're responsible for paying. Open your mail!
