When you buy insurance, do you want a door to walk through for service?

Does today's consumer still value customer service, or does their interest in having assistance when buying their personal insurance differ by their age?

We're told that today's younger consumer prefers automation. That they want a more touch-less experience when buying insurance. But then we have them walk in our door and express appreciation for our help in discussing their options and comparing the cost of coverage as offered from several difference insurance companies. Even reviewing the purpose of the coverage is often very helpful.

Older consumers have come to expect quality service, and have a hard time accepting anything less. They may be more inclined to pay a little more for the service and support that comes in dealing with an agent, rather than buying something direct because it's cheaper and taking their chances on the 1-800 number, or the app on their phone.

Insurance companies would like us to be UBER efficient, and focus our time and energy on selling new policies. Their “best practices” models don't budget much time toward service at the agency level, but we honestly believe it is still an important part of the sale.

Buying insurance without any advice or direction may find you buying the minimum limit of liability coverage that is legal on the roadway – because it is cheaper – but then learning it isn't nearly enough when you are involved in an accident and are now legally responsible for injuries or damage you have caused to others. How many thousands of dollars does it take to repair a new vehicle these days? What about the cost of an ambulance ride to the hospital and necessary care for an injured party.

If you're at fault in an accident, most people want to have their insurance company take care of the damage or injury they have caused. That comes by carrying insurance, making smart decisions about the limits of coverage you have the ability to purchase, and understanding that taking care of the other guy or gal is as important as taking care of your own vehicle and passengers.

Don't be afraid to pay a little more for the support of an insurance agent. Don't think you're being a bad consumer if you're willing to spend a little more. Think about the value of it and decide if any additional cost to you is worth it. Do you want a door to walk through when you have questions, when you need to report a claim, or just need some type of assistance with your insurance? Give it some thought before you buy.
